Rep. Matt Gaetz compared allowing Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell to remain
on the House Intelligence Committee to putting disgraced former
Congressman Anthony Weiner, who was sentenced to 21 months in prison for
sexting a 15-year-old girl, on an ethics panel.

“Keeping Eric Swalwell on the Intelligence Committee is like putting
Anthony Weiner on the Ethics Committee,” the Florida Republican wrote
Monday on Twitter.

Republicans have called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to remove
Swalwell (D-Calif.) from the committee after revelations surfaced that he
was connected to a suspected Chinese spy.

“Because of Rep. Swalwell’s position on the House Permanent Select
Committee on Intelligence, his close interactions with Chinese
intelligence services, however unintentional they may be, are an
unacceptable national security risk,” said a letter signed by 17 GOP
lawmakers, including Minority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Rep. Liz
Cheney of Wyoming.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, the Republican leader in the House, has
also said Swalwell should be pulled from the Intelligence Committee.

He said he had received a briefing from the FBI about Swalwell that
“raised more questions.”

“The one thing that was fundamentally answered was he should not be on
Intel,” McCarthy said.

The GOP lawmakers pointed out that the panel is privy to classified and
sensitive information about the national defense.

Axios reported the connection between Swalwell and suspected spy Fang
Fang, who also went by the name Christina Fang.

She entered the US as a college student in 2011 and quickly set out to
cozy up to a number of politicians, including two Midwestern mayors whom
she allegedly slept with, to gather information and gain influence.

Fang first met Swalwell when he was a city councilman in Dublin, Calif.,
and went on to help him raise funds for his 2014 campaign.

Swalwell has refused to deny having slept with Fang.

Federal agents who had been investigating Fang briefed Swalwell about her
in 2015 and he cut ties with her.
